چکیده

We present a general sampling procedure to quantify model mimicry, defined as the ability of a model to account for data generated by a competing model. This sampling procedure, called the parametric bootstrap cross-fitting method (PBCM; cf. Williams (J. R. Statist. Soc. B 32 (1970) 350; Biometrics 26 (1970) 23)), generates distributions of differences in goodness-of-fit expected under each of the competing models. In the data informed version of the PBCM, the generating models have specific parameter values obtained by fitting the experimental data under consideration. The data informed difference distributions can be compared to the observed difference in goodness-of-fit to allow a quantification of model adequacy. In the data uninformed version of the PBCM, the generating models have a relatively broad range of parameter values based on prior knowledge. Application of both the data informed and the data uninformed PBCM is illustrated with several examples. r 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Functional-Coefficient Autoregressive Model and its Application for Prediction of the Iranian Heavy Crude Oil Price

Time series and their methods of analysis are important subjects in statistics. Most of time series have a linear behavior and can be modelled by linear ARIMA models. However, some of realized time series have a nonlinear behavior and for modelling them one needs nonlinear models. For this, many good parametric nonlinear models such as bilinear model, exponential autoregressive model, threshold...

Model Selection, Estimation, and Bootstrap Smoothing

Classical statistical theory ignores model selection in assessing estimation accuracy. Here we consider bootstrap methods for computing standard errors and confidence intervals that take model selection into account. The methodology involves bootstrap smoothing, also known as bagging, to tame the erratic discontinuities of selection-based estimators. A projection theorem then provides standard ...

Estimation in Simple Step-Stress Model for the Marshall-Olkin Generalized Exponential Distribution under Type-I Censoring

This paper considers the simple step-stress model from the Marshall-Olkin generalized exponential distribution when there is time constraint on the duration of the experiment. The maximum likelihood equations for estimating the parameters assuming a cumulative exposure model with lifetimes as the distributed Marshall Olkin generalized exponential are derived. The likelihood equations do not lea...

Finite Mixture Model Diagnostics Using the Parametric Bootstrap

Finite mixture models are a popular tool for modelling unobserved heterogeneity. As these models are in general very complex, it is essential to have suitable methods for model diagnostics which allow e.g. to check for model identifiability, model fit and possible model restrictions. In this paper we propose to use the parametric bootstrap for model diagnostics and to visualize the bootstrap re...
